What we know about the New York Knicks vs. the San Antonio Spurs after game 1 of the NBA Finals.

Did you watch the game last night? The New York Knicks came back from a 14 point deficit, midway through the third quarter to rock the San Antonio Spurs 105-95 last night at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas to take a 1-0 series lead in game 1 of the NBA Finals. This game was as entertaining and as action packed as the critics talked about and as competitive as the fans would want it to be.

Knicks' point guard Jalen Brunson didn’t have a great night particularly, however, he scored 30 points in timely fashion, going 12-31 from the field and finishing 2-9 from 3 with 2 assists to help the Knicks win the game in the 4th quarter when it mattered most. Brunson was asked how he felt about the win after the final whistle.

“Wasn’t really our night, wasn’t really my night, most of the night, but we kept finding a way, chipping away… I just liked how resilient we were,” he said when asked how it felt to get the win.

While it did feel good for Brunson and the Knicks to get the win, they had a long road to travel, being down 14 points midway through the 3rd quarter with 6:17 left to go.

The Knicks did show resiliency and toughness, however, battling all the way back to tie the game 76-76 going into the 4th quarter, thanks to Karl-Anthony Towns.

Towns scored 14 of his 18 points for the game in the third quarter run that helped the Knicks position themselves for a 4th quarter insertion of dominance that many Knicks fans are probably hoping they can continue.

The Knicks won the 4th quarter by 10 points and played solid defense on Victor Wembanyama for all four quarters. Keeping him outside of the paint for majority of the game when on offense was well executed by Towns and Mitchell Robinson, and on defense, they made an effort not to allow him better shots at the basket & kept him from getting easy touches.

With the way both teams played last night, it brings a serious question to mind. What do we know about the series between the Knicks and the Spurs so far?

Both the Spurs and Knicks got off to good starts in the beginning of the game, knocking down shots and open 3’s. The game was very competitive for most of, better yet the entire game. Non-stop, back and forth action in transition with lots 3-point shooting, mixed with alley-oops and layups thrilled the crowd for the entire night.

Neither team seems to have an advantage heading into game 2, although the Knicks may be the slight favorites to win the series now, based off of their ability to steal game one on the road against a really good Spurs team at home.

However, the Spurs have shown the capability to bounce back and respond to big losses as they’ve done all year and particularly in the last series when they beat the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Spurs are not the kind of team to pack it up and quit, so if fans are expecting a short series sweep, they may need to buckle up for a bigger ride than they expect. Victor Wembanyama did not have a bad game, but he did not have a great game. Wembanyama could have scored 40 points last night.

His offensive output slowed down a monster night and might be the biggest reason why his team did not walk away victorious. Shooting 6-21 from the field, with 2-9 being from the 3 point line, Wembanyama finished with 26 points when he should have scored more. Expect him to have a better outing in game 2.

This series will be an offensive series. The role players need to play a bigger role. While Towns did have 18 points to go along with 12 rebounds, and played a major role in bringing the Knicks back in the 3rd quarter to help win the game, he may need to score more points for the Knicks to offset “Wemby” as he may get going further in the series.

Spurs’ role players De’Aaron Fox and Devin Vessel need to get going for the Spurs, or that can spell trouble for them moving forward. If Fox can’t be a formidable counter to Brunson and be able to guard him better on defense the Knicks may be able to win this series in less than 5 games.

Whichever team decides to focus on the defensive side of the ball more will be walking away as NBA champions. Both teams played solid last night, but there were lots of wide-open shots left on the floor and too many offensive rebounds for both teams to collect.

With game 2 on the horizon, anticipation is already mounting an experts are picking.
