Triple Crowns

 What even is a triple crown in baseball? Well, it has nothing to do with horses, unfortunately, but rather a rare achievement that few players have done. If you're a pitcher, it is having the most wins, the most strikeouts, and the lowest ERA in the same season. And for a Batter, it is when they lead the league in batting average, home runs, and RBIs. So why are these two things celebrated? Why do baseball fans care? It's because of how rare they are, but also because they are impressive and fun for fans to look back on and see just how good these players were. Pitching triple crowns are more common than hitting ones, where the last one was in 1012, and the one before was 67 years before then. There was one year when Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers and Justin Verlander of the Tigers both won triple crowns in their respective leagues, the only time in history that has happened. Another pitching triple crown, in which Sandy Koufax won 3 in a row in consecutive years, was unheard of at the time, and while some have come close by winning 2 in a row, no one has done it 3 times. Batting triple crowns are much rarer and harder to achieve. They require a player to not only hit for power better than anyone else, but also hit for average. And on top of both of those, you have to get people home better than anyone else. It has only been twice since 1967, which is why Miguel Cabrera's 2012 season was so memorable for baseball fans. With 44 home runs, 139 RBIs, and batting .330 throughout the season, there was no doubt when he won the AL MVP for that season, and why it is still talked about to this day
