The New York Knicks became NBA Champions Saturday June 13th, at midnight and at about that time, they officially played in the greatest NBA Finals series of all time.
A lot of debates will be held, a lot of great series will be mentioned to counter and a lot of arguments will be made on why the Knicks-Spurs series doesn’t deserve the top spot, but on this blog, the Knicks will be vindicated against any scrutiny and doubt that comes along with a historic NBA series that brought forth a lot of “first time” moments.
The Knicks-Spurs series is the greatest NBA series of all time for 5 reasons:
The Knicks-Spurs finals became the most watched NBA Finals since 1998 with an average of 20.6 million viewers per game, according to the NBA.
The Knick-Spurs finals became the most viewed NBA Finals ever on social media with 15 billion views across all social media platforms, according to the NBA.
The Knicks set an all-time Fanatics record for the most merchandise sold in 24 hours, beating out both the Philadelphia Eagles of 2025 when they were in the Superbowl, and the 2020 Los Angeles Lakers team that beat the Miami Heat in the NBA “bubble” Finals, according to the NBA.
The Knicks came back from double digit deficits in each of their four victories of the finals to win the title; one being the most points to ever be down in an NBA Finals game when they stormed back from 29 points to beat the Spurs in Game 4. They also posted the best point differential in NBA history (+283) surpassing the 2017 Warriors (+230), according to the NBA.
The Knicks won their first NBA championship in over 53 years as heavy underdogs against a 60-win team in the San Antonio Spurs that was picked as a major favorite to win the NBA title by Vegas sportsbooks with -210 odds to win it all on BetMGM as well as others.

The Knicks not only showed true grit and resiliency when facing adversity in the NBA Finals against the Spurs, they showed heart, determination and will, being able to continuously mount comebacks game after game with a "never say die" mentality.
It’s some of the values and morals that New York City has built its character on, it brought the entire city together for the first time in a long time and it gave true meaning to the 1980 Frank Sinatra classic Theme From New York, New York song, when he said, “I want to wake up in a city that doesn’t sleep and find I’m King of the Hill, top of the heat.”
New Yorkers were a classic embodiment of a city that doesn’t sleep as Knicks fans rallied and partied in the streets of New York City well after game 5 against the Spurs was won, celebrating their NBA champion Knicks in true New York fashion.
No other city in sports could have so much meaning tied into a championship run quite like New York and it was proven as the city willed their team to four classic comeback victories in a historic finals series that will go down as one of, if not the best series of all time.
The classic top five series of all-time when discussed usually include the 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers vs the Golden State Warriors, the 1998 Chicago Bulls vs the Utah Jazz, the 1984 Boston Celtics vs the Los Angeles Lakers, the 2013 Miami Heat vs the San Antonio Spurs and 1970 New York Knicks vs The Los Angeles Lakers. Each of those are classic series in their own rights, but none of them top the resiliency, the grueling battling back the Knicks showed in each game and none of them have the overall impact on a city or the game of basketball that this New York Knicks vs the San Antonio Spurs had.
