When it comes to Marvel comics’ long lineage of classic characters and iconic stories, it’s almost impossible to pick out just one hero or group that have had the most impact on the company as a whole. You have the iconic Captain America, who acted as a symbol of freedom during the second world war. You have Spider-Man, the ultimate “nobody” who one day, was suddenly gifted superpowers and must now take on the responsibility of saving the world. Everybody can relate to that…. right? But when it comes to looking at Marvel’s history, it’s important to go back to where it all started. Roots are important! And the Marvel universe was a tree that grew from the love child of both genius writer Stan Lee, and incredible artist Jack Kirby. “The FANTASTIC 4,” also known as marvel‘s first family, was the very first series that truly showed us the potential that was the combination of Lee and Kirby. Clearly such an important part of comic book history, their film discography must be just as intriguing and full.… Right? Well, that’s what we’re here to figure out today we’re gonna compare each cinematic adaptation of the Fantastic Four to its most recent and see just which "Four" is the most Fantastic.
If we're being technical, the FIRST attempt at a Fantastic 4 movie was… actually never officially released to the public! In 1994, Cult Film legend, Roger Corman took his very own crack at Marvel’s first family when he made “Fantastic 4,” a movie that was extremely low budget, was never released in theatres, and was created solely for the purpose of withholding copyright. You see, Marvel had this deal with the film studios that they had to make at least one film about their characters every few years. With that being said, time was running out, and Marvel contacted good old Roger Corman of “Little Shop of Horrors” fame to adapt Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s first ever masterpiece. What came of this? A cheesy, bright, colorful comic book movie full of corny one-liners and extremely crude special effects. Now, most people would watch this film, compare it to others, and somehow still see all of these things as a negative. However, if you look at it from the standpoint of adapting a comic book from the 1960s, this film is quite literally perfect. As a movie? No. As an adaptation of a 1960s comic book? 100% This film perfectly captures the awkwardness and overdramatized energy of early comic books. If you’re looking for something in the same vein as the 1966 Batman series or the Lou Ferrigno Hulk, this movie is for you.
That brings us all the way up to now 2026. It seems as though now it’s a tradition to have a new fantastic. Four movie release every 10 years. Last year, in 2025 the Marvel cinematic universe gave us “Fantastic Four: First Steps.” the first interpretation of the characters since 2015, and their debut in the ever famous marvel, cinematic universe this film, however, is much different than it’s predecessors. Well, the previous two adaptations were clearly products of their own time and both contain qualities of era they were made in, fantastic four: first steps takes place in an alternate reality in which everything is futuristic, but wait… It’s also the 1960s? Yeah, I would have to say that the biggest take away from this interpretation of the characters has got to be its unique stylistic choices in both the characters and environment, as well as the unique casting choices and changes to the original story that both updated and keep it true to the original creation with that being said “Fantastic, Four: First Steps” from 2025 has got to be my favorite interpretation of the group. It acts as a perfect balance of style and substance. But hey, if you disagree, that’s fine too. Everybody has different opinions just promise me you’ll do one thing… Read more comics!!!!!
