Intro to styling 101: Learning the frameworks of body types
“Fashion is all about proportions and using clothing to create visual balance. Whether you're dressing for a photoshoot or a daily look, the goal is usually to highlight your favorite features and create a cohesive silhouette.
Here is a breakdown of four male and four female body archetypes with garment recommendations for each. Fashion is an art for and a language in itself but just like every other thing in life you must learn the rules first, before you can break them.”
Male Body Archetypes
1. The Inverted Triangle (Broad Shoulders, Narrow Waist)
This is often considered the "athletic" build. The goal is to balance the heavy top with the narrower bottom.
• Top: V-neck shirts and fitted polo shirts that show off the frame without being restrictive.
• Bottom: Straight-leg trousers or relaxed-fit jeans to add some volume to the lower half.
• Layering: Slim-fit jackets with unstructured shoulders to avoid adding extra bulk to the top.
2. The Rectangle (Shoulders, Waist, and Hips are Aligned)
The objective here is to create the illusion of structure and a more tapered silhouette.
• Top: Shirts with horizontal stripes or patterns across the chest to broaden the shoulders.
• Bottom: Tapered chinos to help define the lower half.
• Layering: Structured blazers with light shoulder padding to create a sharper "V" shape.
3. The Oval (Weight concentrated in the Midsection)
The focus is on lengthening the torso and creating clean, vertical lines to streamline the look.
• Top: Vertical stripes and dark-colored button-downs.
• Bottom: Regular-fit trousers that sit comfortably at the natural waistline.
• Layering: Longline coats or open cardigans that create two long vertical columns down the body.
4. The Trapezoid (Broad Shoulders, Slightly Tapered Waist)
Widely considered the most versatile shape for off-the-rack clothing. The key is maintaining that natural balance.
• Top: Tailored button-down shirts and crew-neck sweaters.
• Bottom: Slim-fit denim or tailored trousers.
• Layering: Bomber jackets or field jackets that hit right at the hip.
Female Body Archetypes
1. The Hourglass (Balanced Shoulders/Hips, Defined Waist)
The aim is to follow the natural curves and emphasize the waistline.
• Top: Wrap tops and V-necklines that highlight the narrowest part of the torso.
• Bottom: High-waisted pencil skirts or wide-leg trousers.
• Dress: Fit-and-flare dresses or bodycon styles that mimic the natural silhouette.
2. The Pear / Triangle (Hips Wider than Shoulders)
To create balance, add visual interest or volume to the upper body.
• Top: Boat-neck tops, ruffled sleeves, or statement collars to draw the eye upward.
• Bottom: A-line skirts or straight-leg pants in darker tones.
• Layering: Cropped jackets that end above the hip to avoid emphasizing the widest point.
3. The Apple / Round (Broad Shoulders/Bust, Narrower Hips)
The goal is to lengthen the torso and show off the legs.
• Top: Empire waist tops or tunics that flow over the midsection.
• Bottom: Short skirts or slim-fit trousers to highlight lean legs.
• Dress: Shift dresses or wrap dresses that create a defined neckline without clinging to the waist.
4. The Inverted Triangle (Broad Shoulders, Narrow Hips)
This shape benefits from adding volume to the lower body to balance the shoulders.
• Top: Halter necks or tops with narrow V-necks to visually "slice" the shoulder width.
• Bottom: Full-circle skirts, cargo pants, or wide-leg jeans.
• Layering: Peplum jackets that add curves to the hip area.
“Now that we’ve discussed a could ground rules go out there and see how you can get away with breaking them.😈”
As always, LUV SØSA❤️🔥
