The 10 movies that stayed with me from this past month:
10. Manchester by the Sea (2016)
Sometimes the beauty of a film is in how real the pain feels. This movie doesn’t have the need to manipulate the audience. 4/5
9. Hamnet (2025)
heart-crushing, aesthetically impressive, and full of good performances. Art as a form of catharsis is its core. 4/5
8. Phantom Thread (2017)
An interesting dynamic between a couple unable to love in a conventional way, with motherhood as one of the film’s core themes. But I mean, it’s PTA—what did you expect? 4/5
7. Happiness (1998)
Dark, bold, and very uncomfortable, but also funny and brilliant. The film exposes the hollow dynamics of the American family and society. It makes you feel like being human is a punishment, with sarcasm and irony as its tools. 4/56. Benny's video (1992)
A disturbing depiction of how ultra-violent content can impact and shape the mind of a teenager when parental negligence opens the door for the unthinkable to feel ordinary. 4/5
5. Spoorloos or "The Vanishing" (1988)
Very intriguing and very scary because of how real it feels. A horror film that is focused on the psychological horror of a loved one's sudden disappearance. The ending is pure gold. 4.2/5
4. Amores Perros (2000)
Different people from different backgrounds are connected not only by a fortuitous event but by a common search for love, self-forgiveness, and acceptance. 4.2/5
3. Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962)
A classic for a reason. In a couple of hours of a regular day, this young singer discovers a lot about herself as she waits for the results of a medical test that has her on edge. 4.4/5
2. In the Name of the Father (1993)
The heartbreaking story of a father and son serving a sentence for a crime they didn’t commit, as their relationship becomes more and more important. One of the most underrated performances of Daniel Day-Lewis's career. 4.5/5
1. The Insider (1999)
When Michael Mann’s filmography is brought up, people sleep on this one. Two men fighting for the truth and what is right. A story of journalism with the epicness of a Mann film. His films are about true professionals who get the job done—just like him. 4.5/5
A very solid month.
