Famous Catalan Traditions

You will soon realise that there is always something going on in Catalonia if you spend some time there.

People celebrate in the streets one day, there is a parade the next, and occasionally you come across customs that you initially fail to fully understand.

These are a few of the most common Catalan traditions that you might see.πŸ‘‡

🎭 Gegants i capgrossos

Giant figures can be seen walking through the streets of various cities, particularly during festivals.

• "Gegants" are tall figures that stand in for characters.

• "Capgrossos" move joyfully and have large heads.

• They participate in local festivities and parades.

They make the environment dynamic and enjoyable, especially for kids.

🌰 La Castanyada
The smell of roasted chestnuts fills the streets in the fall.

• Celebrated at the end of October

• People consume candies and chestnuts.

• Extremely ordinary and basic

Although it's not a major event, everyone is aware of it.

🌹Sant Jordi

Sant Jordi is one of the most special days in Catalonia, celebrated on April 23.
  • The streets fill with book and flower stalls
  • People walk around, buy books, and enjoy the atmosphere

Traditionally, men gave roses to women and women gave books to men. Today, this has changed — people give both books and roses to anyone, regardless of gender.

It’s a celebration of love, culture, and sharing.

🌲Caga Tió

For strangers, this is typically the most unexpected tradition.

• A face-shaped wooden log

• Before Christmas, kids take care of it

• After that, it "gives" gifts

Despite its peculiar appearance, it's a lot of fun and popular.

🐣Mona de Pasqua

Easter includes this tradition:
  • Figures or desserts made with chocolate
  • Given out to kids
Often bright and lively
Many families look forward to it.

These traditions may appear strange at first. However, things begin to make sense the more time you spend in Catalonia.
After a while, they simply feel normal.

Which custom intrigues you the most? πŸ‘€
