When you think about the dozens and dozens of superhero movies that have come out over the course of the past 30 years or so, a few specific characters come to mind. Arguably, though, the all-time poster child for superhero movies has got to be the the webbed wall crawler himself, Spider-Man. Why is that though?
Does it have to do with the character's extensive legacy over the past 60 years? Maybe it has to do with the fact that he is easily the most relatable superhero of all time. All pretty plausible options, however, I think it’s safe to say that not as many people would be fans of Spider-Man if it weren’t for the multitude of different adaptations, we’ve gotten of the character overtime. So, in light of Spider-Man: Brand New Day coming out in just a few months, let’s take a look at the first cinematic Spider-Man as well as the most recent cinematic Spider-Man and see just what makes the perfect version of the character.

A good place to start? The beginning. The first ever Spider-Man movie that most people remember seeing is the 2002 blockbuster, brilliantly titled “Spider-Man.” Directed by Sam Rainey and starring the incredibly talented Tobey Maguire, this movie absolutely changed the game for all superhero movies to come. I mean everything about the filmmaking just exuded passion. The sets, the costumes, the writing everything was taken care of with such great attention to detail. However, I truly think that the Film wouldn’t have done as well if it weren’t for the brilliance of the lead actor playing Peter Parker. You can say all you want about future Spider-Man actors, but this man wrote the blueprint, and some would still consider him the best Spider-Man actor of all time. Not only is his awkwardness as Peter Parker so incredibly subtle yet genuine, but his serious portrayal of Spider-Man will go down in history as some of the best comic book acting of our generation. (not to mention his win against macho-man Randy Savage.)
Alright, with that being said, it's time to move on from 2002’s “Spider-Man” and jump ahead to 2016’s- Captain America: Civil War??? Yeah, believe it or not, the newest version of Spider-Man that we know and love today actually made his cinematic debut in a Captain America movie. Granted, it was a pseudo-Avengers movie, consisting of a bunch of different heroes fighting for different causes, with the main focus being on the conflict between Iron Man and Captain America. A pretty good story and honestly one of my favorite MCU movies to date, but, no doubt, the breakout star of this film was Tom Holland as our brand new Spider-Man.
In hindsight, Tom had some pretty big shoes to fill, having already been given the mantle of Spider-Man. Not only did he have the all-time great Tobey Maguire to be compared to, but also the talented Andrew Garfield, who had made his final farewell appearance as Spider-Man just a couple years earlier. But, arguably, Tom Holland held his own and cemented himself as one of the great Spider-Man actors alongside Toby and Andrew. Not only did he get his very own trilogy of films, in which he delivered some of the best Spider-Man scenes in the history of the character, He was also given his flowers by both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield when they all appeared alongside each other in Spider-Man: No Way Home. I think it’s safe to say that Tom Holland has officially earned his rightful place in the Spider-Man legacy.
So, who IS the best Spider-Man on screen? Well, I feel like that’s a question that can’t technically or scientifically be answered. I’m sure plenty of people have chalked it up to statistics like who’s suit looks cooler or who’s aunt May makes the best cookies, but when it comes to the best on screen Spider-Man I feel like they all have equally just as much to offer. Tobey Maguire‘s generational acting talent, brings an element to the role that I genuinely think we couldn’t get anywhere else. However, Andrew Garfield’s Emotion and relatability tug on my heart strings more than any superhero Film ever has. And as for Tom Holland, he brings a perfect balance of youthful energy, and dramatic bravado to the role. If you wanted a more straightforward answer, I’m sorry, but I think they’re all the best Spider-Man in their own right. The real winner? Us! Now go watch more superhero movies!
