Your Voice Matters: Standing Up Against Problematic Video Game Industry Trends

There are a number of concerning trends happening within the video game industry that I think it’s important to take time to speak out and raise awareness against these issues rather than just accepting them as the norm. Our voice always matters. One of the most effective ways to do that is through petitions which allows communities to make their concerns heard and put pressure on companies. Below are some notable petitions I’ve found that highlight ongoing issues in the gaming industry. If you are concerned just as I am about these trends, consider signing a petition.

Petition #1: “Stop Killing Video Games” by Kenneth Heikkinen

This petition is a call-to-action against the growing trend in the video gaming industry where companies pull support on a game, rendering it unplayable long after players have purchased it. In recent years, it’s becoming more common for online games to lose support after disappointing sales, leaving loyal players with games they can no longer access. Players want consumer-friendly solutions like patches, offline modes, or community server options so that the games they paid for can be preserved and stand the test of time.

Petition #2: “Stop Nintendo From Monopolizing Video Games” by Pocket Goatskin

This petition urges Nintendo to rethink its decision to pursue a patent that many people see as overly broad and potentially harmful. Following the success of Palworld, Nintendo has begun attempting to patent certain Pokémon-style gameplay mechanics. If Nintendo succeeds, it could set a troubling precedent where major companies can claim ownership over common or genre-defining mechanics, making it harder for other studios to innovate or create new ideas without fear of legal trouble.

Petition #3: “Prohibit Microtransactions in Full-Price Video Games” by Roshan Deb

The petition is asking video game publishers and developers to stop putting microtransactions into paid games. In recent years, there’s been a big surge in games that include predatory monetization features such as battle passes, premium currency systems, and randomized loot boxes designed to keep players spending more and more. These often lock content behind extra paywalls or encourage gambling-style behavior, which many players feel has taken away from the fun and fairness of the game.
