Despite living in New Jersey my entire life, I only visited Grounds for Sculpture (GFS) for the first time recently. I’ve constantly heard so much praise for this place, so my expectations were very high. I will say that this exceeded my expectations.
There are so many interesting sculptures that I discovered during my time at GFS. While I am more drawn to sculptures with a more minimalistic design, I found that I also enjoyed the ones that were more out there. There are various pieces displayed on the grounds. I also want to mention the numerous statues of people, which were so realistic that I kept mistaking them for actual people.
While the titular sculptures are what draw people to visit GFS, I found that the landscape itself is a work of art. There’s plenty of variety in plants, wildlife, and architecture. Every part of it is crafted to enhance the sculptures it’s displaying. Without its landscape, I doubt that GFS would be as memorable.
In addition to the beautiful sculptures and grounds, there are also special events and exhibitions that take place throughout the year. While there weren’t any events taking place on the day I visited, I stopped by Clifford Ward’s I’ll Make Me a World exhibition in the Museum Building. Ward’s works were so unique, colorful, and intricate that I found myself staring at them for a long time.
There are multiple restaurants on campus, with Rat’s Restaurant being the most popular. There’s plenty of quality food with a lot of variety. But I will say that the restaurants have higher prices compared to what’s in the surrounding area.
I felt like the gift shop was a bit of a letdown. There wasn’t much in there that really stood out to me. Plus, a lot of the merchandise was very pricey for what was offered. But, I did think the Turkish ceramic bowls were cute.
Overall, my experience at Grounds for Sculpture was an enjoyable one. I’ll be back to visit again soon.
