The Similarities in Culture Puerto Rico/Cuba

Puerto Rico and Cuba both share many deep cultural similarities, rooted in their shared history, heritage, and geography. Though the two islands have their own unique identity, they have both been considered “cultural cousins” in the Caribbean. Their similarities start with the Taino people who were natives to the islands. Both Cuba and Puerto Rico were colonized by the Spanish and were under Spanish rule for over 400 years. Catholicism which was brought to the islands by the Spanish still remains as a major religion and influences many traditions and holidays. Places like Old San Juan and Old Havana have strong Spanish influence in their architecture and these islands share the same cuisine and music. Both have African influence as well because of the slave trade and this can be seen in their religion, music and dance. Also their flags are very similar to each other because Puerto Rico was inspired by Cuba and the revolution. In conclusion, Puerto Rico and Cuba share a cultural DNA shaped by their Spanish colonial past, African roots, and Caribbean setting. Their differences, political histories, and modern influences give each island their own flavor, but the core of their culture feels like family.
