How Quadeca and Jean Dawson Influence My Music

Quadeca

I have discovered a lot of music over the past five years, and it can truly get overwhelming to keep track of songs and artists that I enjoy with the amount of music that comes out now. We are also in an era of music where there are so many new and specific genres, so again, there is just so much music out there. However, these past three years I have discovered two artists that I just find myself coming back to constantly, Jean Dawson and Quadeca. These two artists have not only given me some of my favorite songs, they also inspire how I create my own music, which is just a cherry on top to their impact on my life.

For those who don't already know, my name is Owen Whitman, and I create alternative/rap music under the name CRASY (it's pronounced "crazy", don't ask why there is an "S"). I have been making music for about 5 years now, and every year I find myself evolving as an artist, and I start to explore new genres and sounds, and just learn more about music production in general. I am writing this blog post to talk about how my favorite artists inspire my music. I am going to keep it short and sweet and get right to the point to make sure I don't waste your time.

Let's start with Quadeca. I first discovered him from his song "Sisyphus" a while back, and I remember thinking about how cool and detailed the production was on the song. For me, the production of a song is my favorite part, and I also believe it is the most important part. So, I had this song in the rotation for a few years, but never really found myself listening to any other songs by him. But, in winter of 2023, I discovered his album "I Didn't Mean To Haunt You", which was a complete switch up sonically for Quadeca. It is a concept album following the ghost of someone who is replaying memories of his life and "haunting" his friends and family. I thought it was some of the greatest, most emotional music I have heard in a long time, and this still stands true for me to this day. Since then, he has dropped two other albums, "SCRAPYARD" and "Vanisher, Horizon Scraper". For me, I took a lot of inspiration from his production style of the first two albums. I thought the glitchy, experimental, and unorthodox production sound was so interesting, that I would try to incorporate aspects of it into some of my own songs. I find it to be so cool how the production style he uses can really bring the vibe of the song into real life. Two songs of mine that are 100% inspired by Quadeca's first two albums are "ANOTHER DAY ANOTHER DEAD (prod. Kire)" and "the things / obesession, (prod. Austin Friel & Arcane Beats)" I really see myself in Quadeca, as his passion for creating music allows him to flawlessly switch between so many different genres.

Now for Jean Dawson. I have been listening to Jean Dawson for a pretty long time now, since about 2022. I remember seeing a clip a few years back about how Jean does not care about what others think of his music, and he just makes whatever he wants. He said the same exact thing when I saw him live in August in Asbury Park, NJ. Hearing him say that, I could not have agreed more. Ever since then, I make my music the way I want to make it, not really caring about what other people have to say about it. I think of it as this, if I'm not creating the music I am passionate about, then I am not showing my true, authentic self, and hiding behind a mask and putting out stuff that I know will please others is against my morals. Jean's sound has also taken an inspiration on me in a lot of my songs. His delivery is very energetic, and he really is a blend of a bunch of genres, such as rap, rock, alternative, experimental pop, and even punk. I took inspiration from his sound in my songs "K.O. (prod. by dot)". and "bad blood (prod. 22 MACKIE)".

Overall, I may be my own artist, but like everyone else who makes music, my favorite artists inspire my sound. I hope that you check out my Soundcloud page, which you can be brought to by click any of the song links, or the CRASY link at the beginning. I also hope that if you have not heard of either Quadeca or Jean Dawson, that you check them out for yourselves. Thank you!
